JOYCE KILMER
165TH INFANTRY, RAINBOW
DIVISION, SOLDIER AND POET,
AUTHOR OF "TREES", BORN IN
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., DECEMBER
6, 1886, KILLED IN ACTION IN
FRANCE JULY 30, 1918.

THIS MEMORIAL WAS INITIATED
BY BOZEMAN BULGER POST,
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
AND WAS SELECTED BY THE
U. S. FOREST SERVICE.

This simple biography of Joyce Kilmer is engraved on a
bronze plaque in the heart of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

Joyce Kilmer was educated at Rutgers College and Columbia University, where he graduated in 1908. He taught high school for a year, and then launched out on his writing career. He took up editorial and journalistic work in New York City, rising rapidly to prominence as an accomplished journalist. From 1913 to 1918, he served on the staff of the New York Times and contributed mean-while to many magazines.

It is as a poet, however, that Joyce Kilmer is chiefly remembered. His love of the common and beautiful things, especially in Nature, found a simple and delicate expression in verse.

Through most of Kilmer's poems and articles runs a strong religious thread. There is a deep, underlying sense of humility, and a worship of things simple and clean and eternal. He sensed the dignity and the God-given unity of all living things, whether man or tree.

TREES

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet' flowing breast.

A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray.
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair.

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest

This Forest is one of the most impressive remnants of our Nation's virgin wilderness. Here, where the headwaters of great rivers rise, immense trees grow in the natural set- ting that was theirs when this region was the unexplored hunting ground of the Cherokees.

Many of the huge trees are hundreds of years old. Some of them are twenty feet around the base and more than a hundred feet high. They include yellow poplar, hem- lock, sycamore, basswood, dogwood, beech, several species of oak, and many others.

In addition to the trees, there is an out- standing variety of shrubs, vines, ferns, mosses, lichens, liverworts, and herbaceous plants. In the spring wild flowers take ad vantage of sunlight which will not be avail able after the hardwood trees are covered with shade producing leaves.

Rhododendron, mountain laurel and azalea are to be found in bloom in the late spring and early summer.

Though this forest is undisturbed by man, it is ever-changing. Some trees die so others may live. Many species of vegetation would be eliminated without occasional openings in the treetops to admit sunlight. Insects and plant diseases take their toll At many places on the forest floor you will see remnants of massive American chestnut trees which, prior to 1925, composed a large part of the timber stand. The chestnut blight disease, accidentally introduced from Asia, has now killed all of the mature trees. Occasional sprouts may still be found.

The memorial tract is maintained in its primitive and natural state. No plants living or dead may be cut or removed.

JOYCE KILMER SLICKROCK WILDERNESS
The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is part of the 14,000-acre Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness. This area lies in the watersheds of Little Santeetlah and Slickrock creeks, which are separated by the ridge between Stratton Bald and Haoe. There are more than 60 miles of hiking trails in this wilderness that follow ridge tops or cool mountain streams. Hunting and fishing are permitted in accordance with state laws.

I could barely contain myself, waiting for this trip to "A Mountain Memory". My husband, my son, and I knew it looked great online, but even still we were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived!
Let me say that booking this cabin was the easiest reservation that I have ever accomplished online. There were no charge issues, there was virtually no wait, and all directions arrived to my email so that we had no questions. The drive instructions were perfect and we didn't miss a single turn - and it was totally dark!
The cabin was just beyond perfect. We felt very much at home. The kitchen, the washer and dryer, the layout, the linens...what can I say? We cooked every night that week except one. The beds were fantastic! It was so warm inside that we only knew it was winter when we looked through those fabulous windows along the front of the cabin. Lucky for us, it snowed the last day! That was great. The big tub in the loft and the wi-fi were much appreciated, as was the big television (my son played his new wii in style all week).
The biggest bonus for us was the orange kitty cat that showed up like clockwork every night when the sun set. We fed him every night. I have pictures of him by the hot tub on the deck, and we did try to figure out who he may belong to. Honestly, we hated to leave him as much as we hated to leave the cabin. We've wondered several times since coming home if he still shows up, maybe for other guests, wanting to be rubbed and fed.
It was quiet and private, but it was only minutes from the stores, towns, and the water. We did get to see several waterfalls, thanks to the cabin's location, and that made the trip even more special. We loved that it was just short drives to the lakes and rivers.
I can't think of anything that would have made the cabin, or our vacation, any better. My husband and I will absolutely be back. It was the best trip we have ever been on and we didn't want it to end. We honestly don't want to travel anywhere else...at the cabin we could just be us, and the proximity to fishing, shopping, scenery, gem mines, and dining makes it the only place we would rather be than home. Actually, it felt better than home, Walt.
We needed this vacation and we thank you with all sincerity for providing this cabin to us with such ease of service, thought towards our comfort, and the greatest price we have ever encountered for so many days of rest and relaxation. Returning soon,
Jennifer, Blake, and Blakeley, Asheboro NC 3/12

We had a wonderful time at the house. It was just what we needed, The place was very clean just an overall nice place to get a way for a while. Thank you, Cody, Asheboro NC 3/12

We had a wonderful time.  A Mountain Memory was so cozy, we felt very much at home the moment we walked in the door.  The beds were amazingly comfortable.  We will definitely be renting again! Mark & Wendy, Debary FL 1/12

We did enjoy renting ‘A Mountain Memory’ last week.  Thanks!  The cabin was very comfortable.  Loved the fireplace, Jacuzzi tub and the hot tub.  I was impressed by the nice furnishings and appliances.  I really appreciated finding the cupboards stocked so well with dishes, pans, etc.  I came with a cake on hand to make and expected to hand mix it, but was very happy to find the electric mixer in the kitchen instead!  I appreciated finding extra blankets too.  The TV set-up is also very nice… we really enjoyed the Direct TV, as that’s not something we have at home.  We were surprised to find a DVD player and wireless internet as well, because I don’t think those were listed in the amenities.  All around, a great vacation… Very relaxing!!!
Sheila & John, Piedmont SC 12/11

The cabin was very nice! The pictures from the web site did little justice to the actual cabin. Other then the food we had to buy on the way in, everything was there. It was very clean. I was worried being a little close to the road if you could hear the cars and trucks but actually it was very quite at night. Overall it was very relaxing and cozy! The spa was clean and did take a little longer then expected to warm to desired temperature but once all set up it was the best feature! I also enjoyed having a washer/dryer combo there on site, it made our stay very smooth and plus I hate traveling back with smelly clothes. Thanks for the experience! The cabin was an easy find thanks to your directions. We will definitely be planning another trip in months/years to come. Thanks again!
David, Fort Worth TX 5/11

We had an enjoyable and memorable stay at Mountain Memory. The cabin was meticulously clean, quaint, and beautifully decorated. For us Floridians, it was cold, but you would never know it from inside our cabin. The central heat supplied us with ample amount of warm air, making us feel all cozy inside. We had a great time and look forward to visiting again soon. Sincerely, Jeremy and Lori, Bradenton, FL 12/10

Walt, we had a wonderful vacation!  "A Mountain Memory" was much more than we expected for the price!!!!  Our boys absolutely loved having a loft bedroom to themselves and their own bathroom.  My husband and I drank our coffee on the deck each morning, while listening to the sounds of nature and enjoying the cool mountain breeze. Thank you so much! Josh and Bev. Kentucky.

Our stay at the cabin was beyond my expectations. The pictures on the web some how don't do the cabin justice. My wife and I were both very impressed with how nice the cabin is. It was a truly wonderful stay that we hope to repeat in the future. Thank ya'll so much! Sincerely, Noah & Hannah p.s. See ya'll again soon!

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at your Mountain Memory Home.  The pictures really don't do your cabins justice once you cross the threshold.  We literally had to force ourselves out of the cabin it was so nice.  We have not decided were we are going this year for our anniversary but your place by far has been the best and well worth the 6hr drive from Greensboro, NC. Thanks again, JD

Your cabin was absolutely lovely and made our stay in North Carolina very, very pleasurable. Very clean and well equipped and the location was just superb for the things we wanted to do. My husband took his motorbike with us so we enjoyed many days of riding the tail of the dragon and even took several day trips to Tennessee. We rafted on the Nantalaha River several times, took a few day hikes on the AT, and did a few of the very challenging trails at Tsali. We also had a lot of fun visiting Asheville and the smaller towns. Great vacation! A fabulous vacation and we would love the rent your cabin on the lake next time. Bobbie

What a fantastic way to spend a honeymoon!  The cabin was more than we could have imagined.  Immaculate, romantic, completely relaxing and inviting.  The decor is perfect and the Jacuzzi and hot tub, well, what can we say?  Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this lovely retreat.  We hope to celebrate many anniversaries and special occasions in your "cabin in the sky". With warmest regards, James and JoAnne

I just wanted to say that my boyfriend and I loved "A Mountain Memory".  The pictures you had on your website really sold me on this cabin and once we got there we were not disappointed.  Thanks again and we will definitely be back!  Vic

Walt, Our family had a great week! The cabin was much more than we had expected. So wonderful! Everything from the towels to the hot tub were "top of the line". We will certainly be back. Take care and thanks again. The Cockrell clan

Shari and I had the most wonderful and beautiful time during our stay! We said over and over again to each other that our "Mountain Memory" was the best vacation either of us have ever had! We enjoyed it so much that we never left the driveway in the car during our entire time there! We did take a walk up the road (found out how out of shape we were...) but the rest of the time we just relaxed and enjoyed our time together in "A Mountain Memory." We are seriously considering renting there again. Thank You. John and Shari

Which is it? Smoky or Smokey?

We spell it both ways on this web site. So, if you're searching for honeymoon, anniversary or family vacation rental accommodations and log homes, cabins and cottages for rent in the "Smokey" mountains, you'll be sure to find us. Both are common spellings. But if you want to be correct about it, spell it the way the National Park Service does — the Great Smoky Mountains.
Smokey the Bear, on the other hand, spells his name the other way.
And if you're wondering about "Smokeys", "Smokys" or "Smokies," they're all correct.

If you searched for Ashville NC, you're not alone. Asheville North Carolina may be the only city name that is not spelled "Ashville".
